Quarry Bank Garden Information

Quarry Bank Mill GardenQuarry Bank Garden is an 18th century garden created by Quarry Bank Mill’s founder, Samuel Greg, in the 1790's. The eight acre garden, was acquired by the National Trust in 2006 from private ownership and since then has been undergoing restoration. It will open to the public on 11 March 2008.

The garden is the last remaining piece in the jigsaw of Quarry Bank Mill – one of the region’s great industrial heritage sites -  and returns the estate to near Greg’s original vision, as well as completing the mill complex – which includes a Victorian apprentice house; mill workers’ village and the surrounding Styal estate.

Quarry Bank Garden was originally created in the ‘picturesque’ style – fashionable in the late 18th century, and which consisted of a valley garden of meandering paths, terraces and riverside walks with beautiful vistas.

Among many interesting features is a Grotto, put to a variety of uses according to local lore over the centuries, from a dwelling for a homeless family to a blacksmith’s and a place of worship  - which was popular practice  in the late 18th century.

During the late Victorian period annual bedding brought colour to the parterre garden and the intention is to reinstate some of these formal schemes providing visitors with a sense of how the garden would have looked in the early 1900s.
